The Former President's Progressive Warning Overlooks Europe's True Threat: Technological Stagnation.

The recent US national security strategy offers a misguided assessment of the European Union. It claims that unrestrained immigration and what it terms "woke" agendas represent an grave threat to the continent's identity. However, this perspective rests on a serious misinterpretation of the situation. The actual danger confronting the EU is not societal but technological and economic backwardness.

A Glaring Growth Gap Between the US and Europe

Statistics paint a stark contrast. From 2008 and 2023, American economic output grew by eighty-seven percent, compared to a paltry thirteen and a half percent growth for the European Union. During this time, EU GDP per capita dropped from 76.5% to just 50% of the American figure. Remarkably, even Mississippi now has a greater average income than major European economies like France and Italy.

Currently, about 50% of the world’s 50 largest technology firms are American, while only four are from Europe.

The Innovation Deficit: A Critical Question

The growing economic gap is driven by superior efficiency gains in the US, largely due to breakthroughs and better use of resources. The scene of global tech dominance is decidedly US-centric. Over the past fifty years, 241 US firms have grown into companies valued at over ten billion dollars, compared with only fourteen in the European continent.

This gap raises a pressing issue: In the race for tomorrow's sectors like semiconductors, AI, and fusion energy, where does Europe stand? Most analysts agree it is largely a contest between two between the United States and China, with European nations entering at a clear disadvantage.

Underlying Factors of Europe's Innovation Gap

A number of major reasons account for this technological divide.

  • Venture Capital: The United States has a much more robust and agile network for funding startups. Europe has yet to establish a genuine unified investment market, which limits the growth potential of new firms.
  • Regulatory Fragmentation: Excessive and fragmented regulation hinder Europe. A American entrepreneur can introduce a product under one regulatory framework to access a market of over 330 million. The EU, despite a larger population, is divided among twenty-seven different national systems, creating significant internal barriers.
  • Mindset Differences: Attitudes toward entrepreneurial failure differ sharply. In parts of Europe, business failure was once met with stigma, whereas in the United States, it is often seen as a valuable lesson.
  • Military Investment: The United States enjoys a tightly woven innovation pipeline linking defense and academia. Europe's chronic underinvestment in defense has eroded its capacity for breakthrough innovation.

The Road Ahead: Grounds for Hopefulness

In spite of these hurdles, there are reasons for hope. Policymakers are increasingly aware of the severe threat and have started to advance substantial change. Notable analyses on European competitiveness and the single market highlight the need for major changes.

With the right policies and regulatory reforms, these assets could support much higher levels of business-led breakthroughs.

Europe still possesses considerable advantages: high-quality human capital, excellent schools and universities, and world-class research institutions. Alongside a large internal market and high savings rates, these elements could unleash a new wave of venture creation.

Crucially, even if Europe does not take the lead in developing next-generation tech, it can still dramatically increase productivity by implementing and tailoring advancements from elsewhere.

An Inflection Point

Europe now stands at a critical moment. As the saying goes, decline often happens "gradually and then suddenly". To date, Europe's slide in innovation has been gradual. But, without bold steps to address its structural weaknesses, today's gradual weakening could give way to a sudden and irreversible decline in world influence.
