Harvard ex-president Summers Steps Down from AI Company's Directors
One-time economic leader Lawrence Summers is leaving the board at the artificial intelligence firm, just days after a series of emails between him and notorious criminal Jeffrey Epstein became publicly available.
The economist remarked in a statement that he was "appreciative for the privilege to have served, excited about the potential of the enterprise, and look forward observing their development".
The prominent academic, who previously presided over Harvard University, declared on Monday that he would be stepping back from public responsibilities due to his connections with Jeffrey Epstein.
Email Communications
The recently released messages demonstrated that Summers exchanged messages with the financier until the day before his 2019 apprehension for accused human trafficking of minors.
In a separate statement, the AI firm said it respected his choice to resign.
"We acknowledge his numerous inputs and the insight he offered to the governing body," the organization commented.
Legislative Background
This news follows after the entire Congress of Congress decided on Tuesday to pass a measure that would require the federal prosecutors to release its documents on Jeffrey Epstein.
The measure will then head to the administration of President Trump for signature. Trump has said he expects to sign the bill, after reversing his view on the subject following pressure from his base.
Correspondence Findings
A collection of Epstein-connected messages released by the legislative panel days ago referenced multiple prominent individuals in the billionaire's past associates, without suggesting any legal wrongdoing by those figures.
The communications indicated that Summers and Jeffrey Epstein often met for meals, with he often attempting to introduce the academic to influential global figures.
Individual Statement
After the messages were shared with the general audience, he said he assumed "full responsibility for my ill-advised decision to continue communicating with Jeffrey Epstein".
He further stated that he wanted "to restore faith and fix relationships with the persons nearest to me".
Previous Positions
Summers served in leadership roles under Democratic administrations; serving as treasury secretary under the former president, and as director of the National Economic Council under President Obama.
He presided over the university from the early 2000s and continues to be a professor there. When declaring his departure from public duties earlier on this week, he said he would continue his teaching commitments.
Other Impacts
Following his announcement on earlier this week, the Center for American Progress, a left-leaning policy institute in DC where he was a senior fellow, confirmed that he was not associated with the institution.
He entered the directorate of OpenAI, which develops ChatGPT, in last year - following a unsuccessful effort to replace its chief executive the company leader.
