Three members of law enforcement perished and more than a dozen people were hurt in a seemingly premeditated gas explosion at a farmhouse in the northern part of Italy.

Sequence of Events

The explosion was triggered as police and firefighters entered the property close to the city of Verona to execute an eviction order for two brothers and a sister in their late 50s and mid-60s.

The three deceased individuals belonged to the Carabinieri force.

Arrests and Aftermath

A man and a woman were taken into custody at the location and another man who fled following the explosion was located soon after. All three have been taken to the hospital.

The explosion could be heard approximately 5 kilometers away and photographs from the scene revealed the structure turned into a pile of rubble.

“We are in a period of mourning,” stated Interior Minister the Interior Minister, who noted that attempts had been made to remove the three siblings in the previous occasions.

Background and Motive

The leader of the Veneto region, President Zaia, explained the property was under an removal notice due to unpaid amounts accumulated by the property owners.

Mediators had been dispatched to speak to the family members who had secured themselves into the property. When the police reached the location shortly after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), authorities suspect a family member set off the explosion.

“When we entered the property, we faced an utterly insane act,” local police chief Claudio Papagno stated to reporters.

Defence Minister Guido Crosetto joined other elected representatives in honoring the three officers who had been killed in the performance of their duties.
